A spyware in Brazil was hijacked by hackers who had access to thousands of data. In addition to intercepting emails, cybercriminals have also disconnected more than 76,000 tracked devices in Latin America.
According to this TechCrunch, the affected spy application is called WebDetetive. On its website, the developers explain that WebDetetive serves to find “what the person is doing on their cell phone” and that the person “will not even know they are being tracked”.
In a note verified by the website, hackers allegedly gained access to the WebDetetive database and servers. They deleted all the devices in the environment with active spyware, that is, the mobile phones of the monitored users.
The note also explains that hackers have hijacked a cache containing more than 1.5GB of data extracted from the Brazilian spyware panel. This data included information such as the IP of the people logging into the spy app, the purchase history, the devices hijacked by each person using the system, and what “target” information was collected.
According to this TechCrunchThe cache did not contain details of what was being spied on people who had WebDetetive installed on their phones.
Who hacked Brazilian spyware?
Information on the attack on the Brazilian spy app was compiled by DDoSecrets, a nonprofit collective that compiles data exposed on the internet. The poll shows WebDetetive has been installed on at least 76.7k devices, mostly in Braziland 74,336 e-mail addresses were stated to be customers of the service.
Although the incident has been made public so far, Not possible to know who hacked WebDetetivebecause there was no signature in the act.
Presumably the spyware invasion was not intended to generate any financial gain. One of the indicators of this was the message the hackers left in the note: “We certainly did. Because we can. Because they wrote “#fu*kstalkerware”.
This was the second recent cyberattack against a spy app. A few months ago, Polish LetMeSpy was shut down after the service was hacked and the data on the spied phones was deleted from the servers.
Other side
With free trials, WebDetetive runs on Android smartphones and can only be downloaded from the official website, as Google Play does not allow such software (although some apps hide spyware). Brazilian spyware describes itself on its website as “the best way to monitor cell phone”.
The software has several possibilities for spying. In addition to reading sent and received messages, it monitors WhatsApp audios, photos and videos, monitors direct conversations on Instagram and Facebook, locates spied mobile phones in real time, records calls, typing and much more.
HE Technology World I contacted an email posted on the WebDetetive website but did not receive a response until I closed the text.
