Japanese Sony Interactive Entertainment, which is responsible for the release of PlayStation game consoles, has filed 25 lawsuits against individual entrepreneurs in Russian arbitration courts in Russia since the beginning of 2023, Kommersant writes.
All cases for which there are documents in the arbitration case file relate to PlayStation trademark infringement. In two cases, the court met the requirements in full, in three more – in part. The remaining claims are pending.
At least two of the cases analyzed are related to the sale of counterfeit gamepads at Wildberries. The marketplace itself said it “monitors” the range of products 24 hours a day, and that companies can resolve disputes using the site’s “digital arbitration.”
The newspaper notes that the number of lawsuits filed since the beginning of the year exceeds the typical level for Sony subsidiaries in the years before the outbreak of hostilities in Ukraine.
In 2013, courts heard 11 lawsuits from SIE’s predecessor in Europe, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE), against individual entrepreneurs and electronics stores. In subsequent years, there were fewer complaints from Sony subsidiaries, including Russia’s Sony Electronics.
