The malfunction resulted in the NATS system software crashing, forcing air traffic controllers to manually enter flight plans, and significantly reducing air traffic capacity.

The August 28 outage has left UK airlines and airports in chaos; about 800 outgoing flights and as many inbound flights were cancelled. The problem arose when one of the airlines offered a flight plan over UK airspace. Although there were no errors in the plan itself, the software received duplicate identifiers for two different points on the map, which led to confusion.
