According to Skoltech, Russian telecom operators do not have around 50 thousand new base stations to be fully developed in 2023. They are considering Chinese analogues, but they turned out to be less stable and functional compared to solutions from Huawei, ZTE, Nokia and Ericsson.
An expert from Skoltech explained that the increase in the cost of equipment and the halt in its supply are the main reasons for the shortage. He also emphasized that the closed nature of Chinese systems makes them incompatible with solutions from other companies.
Industry representatives claim that some Chinese suppliers are planning to adapt their equipment to Russian networks. However, using such third-tier stations may cause network failures and increase maintenance costs due to inadequate support and software updates. Russian companies have also begun to develop their own equipment, but production is still limited.
The company McScomm has received certificates for the supply of Nokia base stations and radio modules, which can partially solve the problem of equipment shortage in Russia.
