China produces about 80% of the world’s gallium and 60% of germanium. However, customs data showed that these elements were not exported in August, down from 5.15 mt of gallium and 8.1 mt of germanium in July.
China’s Ministry of Commerce said it had received applications for the export of these materials and had approved some of them, without specifying what they were.
The move is seen as China’s response to US export controls despite domestic economic problems. Analysts warn that restrictions on exports could negatively affect the Chinese economy and cause supply chains to shift out of the country.
