The EEOC alleges that the plant was filled with racial slurs, epithets, and offensive racial stereotypes, creating a hostile environment for black employees. It is also alleged that black employees who voiced concerns about their treatment were harassed or fired.
The lawsuit details incidents of racist graffiti, including threats and the “N-word,” found in various areas of the business, from work areas to restroom stalls. Black employees said they frequently encountered such offensive images.
The allegations are consistent with previous complaints and lawsuits filed by black employees against Tesla; these include a 2021 $137 million damages verdict against a former employee who accused the company of ignoring widespread racism.
