OpenAI CEO Sam Altman plans to use Ive’s design firm LoveFrom to develop the company’s first consumer device, according to the Financial Times.

Discussions about what this device would be like took place at Ive’s studio in San Francisco.

Three sources familiar with the plans say Ive and Altman aim to create a device that will provide a “more natural and intuitive user experience” for interacting with artificial intelligence.

They are inspired by how the touchscreen technology in the first iPhone radically changed the way we interact with the mobile Internet. Softbank CEO Masayoshi Son is offering financing for the project.

Interestingly, despite Ive’s key role in the creation of the first iPhone, he had previously expressed concerns about addictive behavior associated with smartphone use.
