Last week, the long-awaited horror film “Saw 10” was released worldwide. Can you imagine what might surprise you with the tenth episode about a maniacal amateur engineer?

Surprisingly, the film received a lot of ratings. Thus, on the Rotten Tomatoes website, “Saw 10” received a rating of 85% based on 100 reviews, becoming the best film in the series. The previous record (50%) is the activist of the first part, other films are rated much lower.

We have already watched the new film and were very surprised. First things first, no spoilers.

Actually this is Saw 1.5

What is the movie about: The plot of the story begins when John Kramer learns that he has brain cancer. Realizing that conventional treatment will not help him, he heads to Mexico in search of a risky and expensive experimental treatment.

The hero is convinced of a quick and painless recovery with the help of surgery and cocktails, but everything does not go according to plan.

The most important thing that the viewer needs to know is that “Saw 10” positions itself as a direct continuation of the 2004 film “Saw”, the content is a single, clear story about the places.

In other words, if this episode had been numbered correctly, it would have been called Saw 1.5, since it took place between the first two films, before Kramer fully came to terms with his diagnosis. This is the main difference from the sequel, which left you confused with plot and timelines.

On the one hand, this makes the story easy to watch, an independent story accessible to newcomers to the franchise, but on the other hand, it makes it extremely flat. Fans of the franchise don’t exactly appreciate such straightforwardness.

In the “Stack 10” plot, the servants are only pretext in order to provide fans with the bloody spectacle they were expecting.

The first hour is terribly boring

The story’s length of 118 minutes makes the film the longest in the franchise. This allows the story to be told in detail and, for the first time, to do what all voice-acted Saw films should have done – put John Kramer at the center. We see John in a more vulnerable world, the film really makes us sympathize with him and understand his thoughts better.

Kramer, who although dominates this franchise, is usually a supporting character, but this time he became the main player in the story.

However, watch the first hour excruciatingly boring. The narration is too leisurely, some scenes do not make any sense, and some are surprising due to the lack of logic. I just want to rewind the film to the usual carousel of traps.

Still, it is impossible to change the attitude towards Kramer. We all know what things he came up with and implemented, and how many limbs suffered from his ideas.

Plot twists are not surprising, there are none

To some extent, the new film is a very clever reboot of history. After all, such a script move allows you to make a film 1.6, 1.7, and so on. Will this be interesting to watch? Big question. Yes, the desperate hero grabs the last chance of hope – experimental therapy – and finds himself in very unpleasant conditions in the future. But in any case, we know how John’s story will end. Here the first minus of the story is revealed – it is impossible to worry about the main character.

Another problem, a more serious one, is filmmaking. insipid and disappointing. If you are tuning in to the trademark crazy twists in the plot to the famous melody “Zepp – Eight”, then you will be disappointed here too. Everything is too banal and guessable.

That is, 15 minutes before the end, the prepared viewer already understands how the story will end. The only question is about the details of what is happening. But are they so important when the main puzzle is solved?

Antagonist and protagonist: Jigsaw has a worthy opponent

The only really interesting plot point in the story is the presence of John’s famous rival in the film. At that moment, when the hero realized that he had been cruelly deceived, and his salvation was only a masquerade, a look of admiration and mutual respect appeared in his eyes for a moment.

One is a brilliant engineer of crazy machines and shows up with the cunning of the other as a master of traps. Although not as bloody, but no less ruthless in essence.

A sadist with a messiah complex faces an antagonist who likes to play as rough as he does. Excellent script move.

Undoubtedly the appearance interesting strong and smart character makes the story more interesting and, it would seem, more unpredictable in its outcome. But as I already mentioned, firstly, we know that the main character still has a long way to go. Secondly, the strength of mind and cruelty of rival John Podan is too clumsy.

At first, the character appears to be a savior with new treatments. But the form of the role’s plot is reversed. By the end he turns into a villain with sadistic traits, which can continue to be observed in confusion caused by mixed feelings.

The fans will be happy, the evidence is clear

Why then did audiences and critics like the film so much?

This is where Amanda returns, having made the sacrifice from the first installment of the franchise to become a devoted protégé. Her role became more significant as she interacted more actively with Kramer, confronting his pitfalls and his own struggles with illness.

We see Amanda as Kramer’s student, who learns easily but is too afraid to continue his work after his death. She fears she won’t be able to replace him and struggles with her morals.

But the filmmakers don’t even bother with CGI to make the returning actors look twice as young. And if with Kramer sick such a move does not seem necessary, then Amanda looks older. Quickie.

There is memorable traps. This is the bread and butter of the entire franchise. They seem as cruel and sophisticated as always, but you can’t shake the feeling that you’ve already seen something similar in some of the parts. Perhaps the scene with the saw is the only one that is truly memorable. The film lives up to its name, just as it did 19 years ago.

Otherwise, everything is classic – complex, twisted traps await the victims, in which they atone for their dishonesty or moral failures of the struggle, harming themselves in exchange for salvation.

Special exception variety of trapsThere was a place for amputation devices, vacuum eye devices, and craniotomy instruments. A torture carousel for every taste. Although there are questions about the traps, because the difficulties of each of them vary greatly. All for the sake of the ending of the story.

Here again, terrible scenes are relished, different from terrible people, but in the shameful 6-7-8-9 parts, the emphasis is still placed on the place of feeling the character’s pain, and not on the immediate “meat”. At the same time, some moments can cause both laughter and vomiting.

Conclusion. You may or may not watch it

You shouldn’t believe in the hype and who names the best film in the entire franchise.

Over the years, Saw has been trying to find some kind of moral justification for cruelty, to draw attention to the real problems facing our society. This time it turned out a little better than out loud. But in fact, this is still a bloody garbage slasher without any revelations or wow effect.

PS Don’t forget about the incident in the middle of the credits, where fans will also find another old friend.
