80% of all investments in the field of artificial intelligence go to startups whose founders are men, a study by British scientists shows. Additionally, “female” startups attract six times less investment per deal, and funds investing in AI startups are predominantly made up of men.
The British Alan Turing Institute carried out a study that revealed a significant gender inequality in the field of venture investments in the development of artificial intelligence. The results of the study are published on the institute’s website.
The institute studied data on investments in AI for the period from 2012 to 2022. It turned out that 80% of venture capital investments in the field of AI attracted startups whose founders are exclusively men. Startups with all-female founders attracted just 0.3% of total venture capital funding in the AI space.
The study also found that startups with female founders had six times less investment per deal than startups with male founders: £1.3 million versus £8.6 million.
Furthermore, only 5% of the funds that have invested in AI startups are made up of men and women. In most cases, these funds are managed exclusively by men, the scientists concluded.
