The technology, announced in October, uses a semantic index to search for local files using natural language. Requires a computer with Copilot Plus and an NPU chip.

The function is integrated into the search bars in Explorer, Settings and Taskbar. AI search works offline and covers JPEG, PNG, PDF, TXT and XLS files.

Users can specify which folders to index through settings: Settings > Privacy & Security > Windows Search.

In the future, Microsoft plans to add a cloud data search feature like OneDrive. At the first stage, tests are available for Snapdragon-based PCs with Copilot Plus, later devices from Intel and AMD will be supported.

AI search supports the following languages: Chinese, English, French, German, Japanese and Spanish.
