In 2022, the number of luxury cars (more than 10 million rubles) in Russia increased by 22%. The “luxury tax” applied to them increased by a third, according to data from FinExpertiza.
Neither the COVID-19 pandemic nor foreign sanctions, which limited access to the luxury segment and caused a sharp increase in prices, could affect its popularity among Russians.
The average amount of tax payable for 2022 was about 169 thousand rubles. Most often, luxury cars can be found in Moscow: 8.2 thousand cars are registered, in St. Petersburg – 2 thousand, in other regions their number does not exceed a thousand.
The increase in the number of luxury cars is probably due to the desire of citizens to “park” depreciating savings, and buying a new car is one of the options, NKR General Director Andrey Piskunov told RBC.
In the third quarter of 2023, the average cost of a used car in Russia increased by 39% in annual terms and reached 640 thousand rubles. Sales of this type of car have increased by 14.2% since mid-summer compared to the same period last year.
