Experts have found that people tend to become less narcissistic as they age, with the rate decreasing as a person moves from childhood to old age.
At the same time, differences between people remain at roughly the same level. That is, people who are more narcissistic than their peers in childhood remain the same in adulthood.
The results of the new study were published in the journal Psychological Bulletin. For the study, researchers analyzed data from 51 studies, each measuring how participants’ levels of narcissism changed over time. A total of 37,247 people, ages 8 to 77, participated in the studies. Of these, 52 percent were female and 48 percent were male.
All three types of narcissism (agent, antagonistic, and neurotic) appeared to decline from childhood to old age.One limitation of the study is that most of the studies were conducted in the United States and Western Europe.
