The iPhone lock screen is getting an overhaul by Apple with the arrival of iOS 16. This allows you to further customize your lock screen. The latest version of the iPhone’s operating system was announced Monday at the WWDC developer conference.

In iOS 16 it will be possible to change the font and color of the clock. You can also add widgets to the lock screen that give you an instant overview of all your calendar appointments, the outside temperature, or your recent sports activities. You can move certain items on the screen as you wish by holding them down.

It’s even possible to create multiple access screens that you can switch between. This is especially useful in conjunction with the Focus feature in iOS. If you are at work, you can choose a lock screen with certain notifications disabled, while at your leisure you can choose another lock screen to receive notifications.

Apple has chosen to show notifications at the bottom of the screen, which looks much more fluid. Also interesting is the option to follow live activities. So you no longer have to unlock your phone to see the current status of a football match or where your Uber taxi is.

In iOS 16, you can set the lock screen to your liking.

messaging app

Apple is also addressing the Messages app in iOS 16. The option to edit messages after sending is useful. Do you still regret your message? Then you can even retract the message. By the way, this function is not so revolutionary. This has been possible for a while on WhatsApp.

The Messages app will soon support SharePlay as well. This allows you to watch your favorite shows or listen to music with friends or family. Now SharePlay is only available on FaceTime.

Voice Memos will also get a minor update, which will make it easier to write text based on recorded messages. For example, you can choose to use the keyboard while speaking. You don’t need to look for emoticons anymore, because the ‘smiley’ voice command is already enough to get the corresponding emoticon in the message.

Apple Pay Later

Apple is also expanding the capabilities of Apple Pay. For example, Apple Pay Later was introduced, which allows you to pay the amount of a purchase in installments. You do not pay interest for this. This feature will also be available in the Netherlands.

In the Wallet app you not only get an overview of all payment terms, but you also get an idea of the status of an order. You can immediately see if your package has arrived.

cards

The Maps app is also getting an update in iOS 16 and is starting to look more and more like Google Maps. For example, you can see various buildings in 3D, as in Google’s maps app, and Apple is promoting its own version of Streetview. The option to add up to 15 stops to a route is useful.

The connectivity between maps and public transport services will also be improved. This gives you more information about the departure times of the trains as well as the costs of a train ticket. It will also be possible to upload your public transport card to the Maps application. Whether this is also possible in the Netherlands remains to be seen.

Share photos

Sharing photos with your family is easier in iOS 16 thanks to the shared iCloud library. This is a standalone library that can accommodate up to five members of your family. iPhone can even recognize that you’re with your family when taking a photo, so the captured photo is automatically placed in the shared iCloud library.

iOS 16 will be available in the fall.
