While US companies such as Waymo and Cruise are focusing on car-sharing services with their autonomous vehicles, the coastal city of Dubai United Arab Emiratesaims to take the technology to the next level by introducing it into police patrol cars.

Dubai Police recently announced plans to use all-electric and autonomous patrol cars in residential areas, local media reported this week.

The robocar’s battery allows it to continuously patrol for up to 15 hours, and is also equipped with an advanced surveillance camera with 360-degree coverage and facial recognition technology. It also comes with AI-powered intelligence that helps detect suspicious behavior.

But don’t expect to see a high-speed chase if you need to chase down a suspected criminal: the car’s top speed is only 4.35 mph (7 km/h).

If it detects something that requires further investigation, the self-driving car will send an alert to the Command and Control Center of Dubai Police’s General Operations Department, which can then organize a human response.

The vehicle, which was designed and built by 65 engineers over five years, also features a camera drone capable of capturing aerial images of a specific location.

“We custom-made the entire mechanical system of this car,” Fareed Al Jauhari, a spokesman for Micropolis Robotics, which developed the car, told Khaleej Times. “Each wheel has an independent steering, braking and acceleration system. This means that the vehicle can move forward, backward or sideways and even make circular movements. “When it moves, it’s so quiet you can barely hear it.”

The autonomous police patrol car requires more testing but is expected to hit the streets next year, according to Micropolis.
