When you browse the Internet, your IP address becomes available to websites, online services and potential attackers. This may result in tracking and other privacy-invading activities.

But IP addresses are also necessary to direct traffic and prevent fraud. A new feature, IP Protection (formerly known as Gnatcatcher), is designed to address these privacy concerns.

This feature will be rolled out in phases, starting from the user-optional phase, giving users full control over its usage. In the first phase, Google will proxy requests to its own domains and only access IP addresses located in the United States.

However, there are security concerns regarding this initiative. The tool can potentially disrupt the operation of various services, including DDoS attack defenders.

Additionally, if Google’s proxy server is compromised, attackers will be able to manipulate traffic passing through that server.
