Ericsson announced patent registration for a technology Allows micro-internet antennas to repair themselves “alone”. The solution, called self-healing or “self-repair” in free translation, was developed by Brazilian professionals.
According to the company, the innovation continues to be tested and will be released only in 2030. Initially, the innovation will be used in so-called Radio Strips, a system combining thousands of malleable micro-antennas that provide 5G and 6G. internet (which will be available seven years from now).
Radio Stripes, which Ericsson introduced in 2019, will be used in environments where there are many people, such as airplanes, buses, concert halls and offices.
Because mini antennas are so small, they can be discreetly applied to carpets, walls, ceilings and other types of surfaces.
How does the technology work?
André Mendes Cavalcante, one of the members of the Brazilian team that invented the self-healing technology, explains that the patent will solve connectivity problems if the tape or Radio Strips are damaged. Technology can compensate for possible malfunctions without impairing service quality.
“If part of the system’s ribbon breaks or the micro-antenna suffers any damage, users close to the affected area will completely or partially lose the signal. In this case, self-healing works to automatically connect compromised users to other operational parts of the tape, compensating for the degradation caused by such failures,” argues the expert.

The solution, which offers the possibility of repairing the antenna, will guarantee higher system robustness, connection stability and guaranteed quality of service for users. The invention will not leave internet users in the region unconnected to use social networks, order a car from an app or send messages to friends.
The patent is 100% Brazilian and was developed by inventors at Ericsson Brasil and supported by students of the Federal University of Pará (UFPA).
