Roskomnadzor was looking for a way to improve its database for finding IP addresses. Nowadays, most online services use foreign sources for this purpose. However, these foreign databases do not always display Russia’s regions accurately. Therefore, Roskomnadzor is developing its own database, which will be more accurate.
This new information system will combine multiple sources of data on the geographic location of IP addresses, including information from Russian telecom operators. The system will be available to users and online service owners at the beginning of 2024. The database will contain information about the geographical distribution of IP addresses and will help increase accuracy when blocking access to online services.
Nowadays, some companies mistakenly block users in the wrong regions from accessing their sites due to inaccurate geolocation data. This new system is supposed to correct this situation and organize the information. It can also help law enforcement conduct investigations and operational activities online.
