Virologist Anatoly Altstein said monkeypox does not pose a serious threat in Russia, considering only one case. He emphasized that the likelihood of this disease spreading in Russia is low.

Last year’s monkeypox epidemic affected 80,000 people, but the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the emergency over and the virus’s transmissibility has decreased this year. Altstein notes that the virus was found in rodents in Africa and spread to monkeys.

The virus is not transmitted only from monkeys, and last year the virus was brought to Europe by people with non-traditional sexual orientation. There is also a risk of respiratory infection. All this reduces the likelihood of the virus spreading in Russia. As a reminder, WHO declared the end of the monkeypox emergency in May 2022, following the outbreak of the emergency in July 2022. In late September, Vietnam experienced its first case of human-to-human transmission of monkeypox virus when Vietnamese citizens traveling from abroad brought the disease to the country.
