Omega-3 fatty acids found in fish strengthen the heart, immunity and benefit the brain. The two most important forms of these acids are DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid).
Results of a study published in the journal Neurology showed a strong link between EPA and DHA levels in the blood and brain health. The team found that people with the highest levels of EPA and DHA performed better on cognitive tests. Additionally, those with the APOE4 gene variant, which is associated with a higher risk of Alzheimer’s disease, and those with high levels of DHA and EPA appeared to have less brain damage.
It has been revealed that omega-3 fatty acids protect the brain, but scientists do not yet know exactly why.
