In 2023, Russians were 20% more likely to travel abroad than in 2022, RBC writes, citing statistics from the FSB border service. Thus, from January to September 2023, the number of trips abroad amounted to 21 million cases, compared to 17.4 million trips in the same period of the previous year.
Data from the Federal Security Service show that the most popular destinations for Russians in 2023 were Abkhazia and Turkey. The number of trips to Abkhazia in the first nine months of the year increased by 4% to 4.61 million trips. Russian travelers traveled to Turkey slightly less, with 4.59 million trips. But the flow growth in this direction was 29% compared to 2022.
Flow to the UAE also increased by 64%, with 1.2 million trips made there. Russians visited Egypt 919 thousand times, the flow increased by 50%. China and Thailand appeared on the list of the most popular destinations.
Among the top 10 is also one of the countries of the European Union: Russian citizens visited Finland 507.9 thousand times in nine months, 30% less than a year earlier, when 731.2 thousand trips were made. In 2022, according to the results of the first nine months, Finland ranked fifth among the most popular countries.
The flow of tourists to Russia has also increased. From January to September, three times more foreigners visited the country than during the same period last year. According to the FSB, about 430 thousand people came to the Russian Federation for tourism purposes, a quarter of which came from China.
