Amazon has traditionally used AOSP (Android Open Source Program) to create customized versions of Android, allowing the company to bypass Google services. But with the development of Vega, Amazon looks ready to take its ecosystem to the next level.
It is claimed that the transition to Vega OS has been ongoing since 2017 and a special team is working on the project. Initial testing has reportedly been done on Fire TV devices, indicating that they could be the first devices to showcase Amazon’s new product, possibly hitting the market early next year.
While the fate of Fire tablets remains unclear, the move is in line with Amazon’s efforts towards a more “optimized and proprietary” operating system. This move could eliminate the Android update delay seen on Amazon tablets.
