Unlimited WhatsApp backup on Google Drive will end. Website in an experimental version of Messenger WABetaInfo I soon found a warning banner stating: message history will start taking up cloud storage.

The new feature is found in version 2.23.24.21 of WhatsApp Business Beta for Android. “Backups will begin filling up your Google account storage in the coming months,” WhatsApp explains in the “Chat Backup” section.

The warning is confirmation of a rumor that has been circulating since January 2022. With the change, WhatsApp standardizes the experience of iOS and Android users, who have not offered unlimited backup in iCloud for a while.

What are the alternatives to transferring conversations?

In recent months, WhatsApp has worked to reduce the space backups take up in its cloud storage. This optimization is very important as the free 15GB of Google Drive will now be reserved for your conversation history.

If you choose not to use backup, the only alternative to transfer conversations from one mobile phone to another is wireless switching. This option has been available in the “Conversations” menu since August 2021.

Should affect all users

Although it is available in WhatsApp Business Beta, the change in cloud storage needs to be applied to all messaging users. However, there is no estimate yet as to when this will happen.

Since this is a significant change, WhatsApp needs to announce the new feature and include support pages to guide the user.
