Mira Murati will become interim CEO of OpenAI following the ouster of Sam Altman.

The company said in a statement that the review concluded that Sam Altman, one of the most powerful people in technology, “was not forthcoming with the board, which impeded his ability to carry out his responsibilities.”

Open AL co-founder Greg Brockman, who served as chairman of the company’s board of directors, will step down at the same time as Altman. The company does not mention the reasons for Brockman’s change, but he himself announced that he had resigned from the company on his behalf a few hours after the news about the CEO’s dismissal.

Brockman published in X his letter to OpenAI employees: “I am very proud of what we have created since we started working in my apartment 8 years ago. We have been through difficult and wonderful times together and have achieved so much despite all the reasons why it shouldn’t have been possible. But because of today’s news, I’m leaving.”

Later he aggregatethat he and Altman were “shocked and saddened by what the board did.” However, both are positive: “We will be fine. More important events will occur soon.”

Just before his resignation, Sam Altman spoke at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in San Francisco and told hundreds of business and government leaders that artificial intelligence systems could solve humanity’s most pressing problems if they were developed in a way responsible.

An anonymous OpenAI investor suggested that a change in management could lead to employees leaving for other companies. The Information writes that Jakub Paczocki, the company’s research director, Alexander Madry, head of the team that assesses potential risks associated with AI, and Shimon Sidor, a researcher with seven years of experience at the startup, told their colleagues that they have the intention to abandon.

The layoffs are a sign of enormous frustration among some employees following Altman’s firing and highlight long-simmering divisions within the ChatGPT creator over AI security practices. And all this happens against the backdrop of intense competition in the AI-based development market. Experts also believe that the chaos at OpenAI, which will surely follow high-profile events, will benefit Google, Microsoft and others.

On Friday night, Microsoft held a company-wide meeting in which CEO Satya Nadella announced that the company would continue working with its partner OpenAI (“We have a long-term agreement with OpenAI, <…> and we remain committed to our partnership, as well as Mira and the team.”

But, according to Axios sources, Microsoft at the time did not yet know that Altman would be leaving OpenAI. Several OpenAI and Microsoft employees also later told Business Insider that Altman’s firing left them “in complete shock.”

The company’s CEO and interim CTO, Mira Murati, joined OpenAI as a researcher in 2018, when the company had only 40 to 50 employees.

She is 34 years old, originally from Albania, and previously worked for companies like Tesla and Leap Motion at different times. She quickly rose through the ranks of OpenAi, becoming its CTO in 2022 and now leading the teams developing ChatGPT and Dall-E 2.

“As a member of OpenAI’s leadership team for five years, Mira has played a critical role in building OpenAI into a global leader in artificial intelligence. “She brings a unique set of skills, understanding of the company’s values, operations and business, and already leads the company’s research, product and security functions,” OpenAI said in a statement.
