Apple plans to achieve all this by 2028, as learned thanks to Mark Gurman from Bloomberg.

Apple has been actively working to create its own modem since 2018, aiming to move away from the Qualcomm components currently used in the iPhone.

The launch date has been postponed several times and is now expected to be ready by 2026. According to Gurman, Apple plans to use the chip in many of the company’s devices, including the Apple Watch, iPad and eventually the MacBook.

Integrating the modem into a system on chip (SoC) will allow MacBooks to ship with built-in mobile communications. Apple previously considered developing laptops with cellular connectivity, but abandoned the idea due to issues with placing components in the chassis. An integrated SoC will solve this problem.
