This device will provide a three-dimensional image of the soil when searching for solid minerals, significantly reducing the number of wells required by up to 10 times compared to traditional methods. Reducing drilling operations will reduce costs and speed up mineral exploration.
Based on scintillating optical fibers with photon detection, the muon detector uses unique software to visualize soil density in 3D. Project leader Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences Alexander Golubev stated that this method is safe for humans and does not require special licensing.
Calculations of the main parameters of the detector have already been completed and a prototype of the muon tomography module has been created. Experts say that it is planned to start testing the prototype by the end of 2024.
