Yiyan He, who conducted the study, said that older adults with hearing problems may lose weight and, accordingly, fat. Using genome-wide association study (GWAS) data from repositories such as UK Biobank, FinnGen and the Genetic Study of Anthropometric Traits (GIANT) consortium, the study focused on participants with an average age of 52 to 63 years. A remarkable association was found: Age-related hearing loss may lead to lower BMI and lower body fat percentage in adults of European descent.

This suggests a unique relationship in which age-related hearing loss may affect body weight and body fat.
