Promising to be a very small and very transportable suitcase, e-scooter Japanese Arma is in the crowdfunding stage, but with the intention of entering the market soon.

The scooter weighs just 4.5 kilograms and features a feature not often found on folding electric scooters of any size: a replaceable battery platform that allows users to quickly replace a dead battery with a new one.

Shimizu estimates that each 3.5Ah 36V lithium battery can power a 250W motor for a range of 7 to 9 miles (11 to 14.5 km), with the Arma still in the prototype stage, and final specifications may change. Top speed is rated at 14.9 mph (24 km/h), which sounds about as fast as anyone wants to ride a small multi-joint scooter. The battery is housed in a central housing housing that connects the scooter’s head tube and kickstand, and is quickly and easily removed for charging in about two hours via USB-C.

The weapon uses multiple joints so it can be packaged much smaller. Each of the two footplates folds around the rear wheel to form the bottom half of a packaged box that rotates to surround the folded front wheel. At the top, the handlebar folds inward, allowing the full-length head tube to fold into thirds along the middle section and become the top portion of the packed carrying case. Shimizu says the process takes less than 30 seconds and hopes to make it even faster in the production version.

The Arma features throttle and brake buttons on the steering wheel, as well as a central display for metrics such as speed and battery life. It can support passengers weighing up to 220 pounds (100 kg).
