A study examining placental secretions found that cellular stress in a particular layer can cause preeclampsia. By examining human placenta samples and creating a unique mouse model, researchers found that it activates signals associated with preeclampsia, causing increased blood pressure, kidney damage, and more. Surprisingly, a drug called MitoQ managed to protect against preeclampsia symptoms.
“We can’t prevent preeclampsia yet, but this study brings us one step closer. We are preparing for clinical trials to examine its effectiveness,” says Dr. Jennifer McIntosh, MCW.
