Blogger Trevor Jacob, whose channel has 143 thousand subscribers, crashed a plane for the sake of hype on YouTube. Now he finds himself in prison.
On December 24, 2021, Jacob released a video titled “I Crashed My Plane.” He actually crashed a light plane after jumping out of it with a parachute.
Before takeoff, the YouTuber installed several cameras on the plane and took with him a selfie stick, which he held during the parachute flight. The plane crashed in the Los Padres forest.
The video was filmed on November 24, 2021, and on November 26, Jacob notified the National Transportation Safety Board of the accident and agreed to identify the coordinates of the downed aircraft and a video showing the debris flowing. He stated that the motor in the fan was turned off as the cause of the fall.
Jacob later stated that he did not remember where the plane crashed, although on December 10 he returned with his friend to the forest and retrieved the crashed plane. Over the course of several days, he dismantled the plane into parts, which he threw along with the wreckage into trash cans at the airport from which he took off. At the end of December, the same video was released, from which it became clear that Jacob knew the location of the destruction.
The US Attorney’s Office charged Jacob with intentionally destroying an aircraft in a state park, as well as obstructing a federal investigation into the incident. The blogger admitted his guilt. He faced up to 20 years in prison, but the court called 6 months in prison.
The video itself is still available on YouTube. In two years, it received 4.4 million views, 46 thousand likes and 291 thousand dislikes. In the comments, many criticized Jacob’s action and his further actions. [The Verge]
