Archaeologists discovered a rare coin during excavations on the Sofia side of Veliky Novgorod: a silver coin belonging to Prince Vladimir Svyatoslavich, considered the baptist of Russia. This find is important as it expands the scope of availability of Old Russian coins and indicates early connections between Novgorod and Kiev. Before that, it was believed that such coins were made only in Southern Russia, and the discovery of the “northern” silver piece confirms new archaeological data.

The second silver coin was found during rescue excavations carried out as part of the reconstruction of the Captain Varukhin Maritime Center. These excavations led to the discovery of several artifacts, including the seal of Yaroslav Yaroslavich, European and Arab coins, and silver coins of Vladimir Svyatoslavich. Interestingly, these coins were made in a short period of time, not more than 30 years, and reflect important political events in Russian history – the formation of the Old Russian state and the adoption of Christianity as the state religion.
