Apple fixed the loophole that allowed Flipper Zero to lock the iPhone using Bluetooth. Apparently devices running iOS 17.2 they are now vulnerable to attacks, Preventing endless string of requests from freezing the mobile phone.

The website ZDNet discovered that the update fixes the vulnerability without making the iPhone’s Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) unusable. Now iPhone with iOS 17.2 is still receiving requests, but they are not enough to completely crash the device.

The breach was made public in early November this year. Owners of Flipper Zero devices with custom Xtreme firmware can trigger constant pairing requests to nearby devices.

In the case of the iPhone, the excess of requests caused the system to freeze and the mobile phone had to be restarted to fix the problem.

At the time, the only solution to the problem was to disable the mobile phone’s Bluetooth when not in use. But this makes the routine for wireless headphone users less practical and requires more steps to connect the peripheral.

It’s unclear how Apple fixed the issue in iOS 17.2. There is probably a mechanism in the system that prevents excessive matching requests. It is a relief for the public that an updated solution is already available.

iOS 17.2 available for download

iOS 17.2 became generally available last Monday (11). In addition to the fix for the Flipper Zero bug, the update introduced the new Journal app on iPhone 15 Pro, more native functionality for the Action Button, and spatial video support.
