Spotify has decided to slow the hiring rate by up to 25%, changing the strategy of increasing the employee team adopted since the onset of the novel coronavirus pandemic. The information was disclosed by the company’s CEO, Daniel Ek, in an email to employees on Wednesday, 15th. CNBC.

In the message, the streaming service’s co-founder commented on the reduction, saying the company will be “a little more cautious” in the coming quarters regarding the arrival of new employees. Despite this, Ek stressed that the brand will “continue to recruit and grow” even more slowly.

Spotify’s chief financial officer, Paul Vogel, had already commented on the company’s growing uncertainty about the current state of the global economy at an investor conference in early June. “We are monitoring the situation closely and evaluating our staff growth in the short term,” the manager said at the time.

At the time though, Vogel said he didn’t detect any significant impacts on the streaming giant’s business, which now appears to have changed. Spotify did not provide further details about the final decision announced by the chairman of the board for now.

Discounts affect other companies

Uncertainties about the global economy also affected other technology giants. One of them was Meta, which announced in May that it has stopped recruiting for certain positions such as data scientists, engineers, and recruiters.

Another company that seems affected is Coinbase. On Tuesday, the 14th, the cryptocurrency exchange revealed a major restructuring, resulting in the layoffs of around 1,100 employees (18% of the current workforce).

In a statement sent to workers, the CEO of the exchange, Brian Armstrong, said: He said the company is preparing for a possible “crypto winter,” citing the unfavorable climate for crypto in recent months.
