Netflix has introduced the world to Zack Snyder’s new fantasy epic, Rebel Moon.
This film promised to be a new milestone in the genre: epic battles, intricate universes and Zack’s signature slightly crazy style. Everything we love.
But our expectations are our problems. Everything turned out to be not as spectacular and interesting as it was shown in the trailer.
We have already watched the new product and are sharing our impressions.
Movie problem #1: weak script
What is the movie about: The film tells the story of a distant space world, where the cruel Imperium terrorizes peaceful planets in search of resources. The main character, Cora (Sofia Boutella), a former Imperial soldier with a dark past, finds a new purpose – a squad of warriors to protect her new homeland of farmers from invaders.
Trying to make something truly epic and memorable requires a well-developed script. And in this case, it seemed that either such a strong script simply did not exist, or in the editing room the film was simply cut in an outrageous manner, which led to simplifications of the plot threads.
The entire film can be described in one sentence – This is where the classic struggle between good and evil takes place.where a small but determined group of people from different worlds confront a powerful suppressor.
Zack Snyder’s ambitious sci-fi masterpiece tells the story of peaceful settlers living on a remote moon who face a threat from a tyrannical Imperial force.
When the evil Imperium comes to seize their crops and subjugate the people, the story’s protagonist decides to lead the resistance. She selects a team of fighters, each of whom adheres to their own principles, capabilities and reasons for resisting the enemy.
The plot revolves around the mystery of Kora’s past and her connection to the Imperium, as well as the development of other characters. The film aims to be deep and exciting, but unfortunately the story feels accessible and full of clichés.
“Rebel Moon” tries to entertain the viewer in all events, but it all seems to be a journey along familiar paths and locations. You just realize that somewhere you have already seen this. The film is a mixture of familiar sci-fi motifs without much originality or innovation.
It seems that the authors remembered all the possible science-fiction blockbusters of the last twenty years, but the basis is the interweaving of “Star Wars” with “Seven Samurai”. But without the spice and novelty that could make this combination interesting.
The storylines are sometimes so advantageous that the viewer can feel like Nostradamus, anticipating every next move.
Movie Problem #2: Flat Characters
Sofia Boutella’s Cora was supposed to be the new icon of strength and fight, but instead she faded away, most likely lost in a galaxy without a clear goal. The cast, while having potential, seems underused, their the characters look insanely stenciled.
Let each of the fighters chosen by Cora bring some uniqueness and skills to the story. But the characters’ motivations and development aren’t deep enough, ultimately making it difficult to watch and connect with them emotionally. And without this, it’s simply impossible to survive your adventures. A beautiful picture in different locations with random characters and nothing more.
Ultimately, the film faces challenges in conveying drama and uniqueness, making it more of a showpiece than an actual reality.
Movie Problem #3: The Fictional World Isn’t Impressive
Of course, the world Snyder created is unhesitatingly unhesitating. From the lush landscapes to the crafted spaceships, the film’s visuals are breathtaking. However, even the most striking special effects do not save the film from sensations that are just a pale reflection of other, more successful space epics.
Juxtaposing “Rebel Moon” with such genre giants as “Star Wars” or “Dune” it becomes obvious: the film tries more copy their style, brings only a drop of newness than to pave a small innovative path. This movie gives the impression of a fan film, made on a huge budget, but without soul or special ideas. It even has its own friendly droids.
And, of course, what would a Snyder movie be without slow motion during its action scenes? A film without them is like pizza without pineapples. But wait, this is good… or not?
All these stylish jumps of the heroes in slowmo were beautiful and exciting back in 2011. Now this won’t surprise anyone, but will only make you yawn out loud.
In addition, the PG-13 rating kills all the tension in some scenes (even well-shot ones). Everything is too sterile.
The conclusions are disappointing: you don’t have to watch
The film tries to embrace the immensity, but ultimately moves forward in the cosmic emptiness of its ambitions. This is a journey that promised to be epic, but turned out to be, rather, a tiring flight through the starry expanses of what had already been seen and experienced.
Despite the large-scale spectacular elements and the interesting planet protected, it depends on dependence and originality, which makes it more a sad sightthan a thrilling sci-fi epic.
At the end of 2024, the story of the confrontation between the fighting farmer and the emperor will continue, but we no longer want to watch it. Too boring.
