A bill proposing additions to the existing law on state control in Russia has been submitted to the State Duma. According to the proposals, Roskomnadzor will be able to conduct unscheduled inspections in the field of communications to detect personal data leaks. The amendments relate to the implementation of the law on state control and supervision in the field of information and telecommunication networks “Internet”.
According to the initiators, such steps are necessary due to the serious problem of personal data leaks in Russia. The number of incidents quadrupled in the first half of the year and 177 million records containing Russians’ personal data were leaked online. The bill will allow us to respond faster to threats and regain control over the communications sector.
The project also gives Roskomnadzor the right to decide on unplanned inspections without prior approval, ensuring immediate response to incidents. This will allow checking compliance with legislation in the field of communications, bypassing the current moratorium.
