Want to keep your Prime Video ad-free? You will have to pay for this. Subscribers will need to pay an extra $3 per month on top of their existing Prime membership.
This move, first announced in September, will primarily affect viewers in the US, UK, Germany and Canada. Other regions such as France, Italy, Spain and Mexico will face an advertising/paying more decision in late 2024.
Amazon promises “significantly fewer ads” compared to traditional TV and other streaming platforms, but exactly how “significant” remains unclear. It is estimated that approximately four minutes of advertising are aired per hour; This might not sound that bad compared to cable TV marathons, but it can still be disruptive to your viewing experience.
The company justifies the changes by saying it will allow it to “invest in engaging content and continue to grow those investments over a long period of time.” Essentially, viewers are funding future TV shows and movies by paying for their ads.
Amazon announced that rented or purchased content will remain ad-free, and some regions such as Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands will be excluded for now.
