The Peregrine module, developed by Pittsburgh-based Astrobotic, aims to be the first private spacecraft to make a soft landing on the Moon.
It is being sent as part of NASA’s CLPS program, designed to pave the way for human landings on the Moon as part of the Artemis program.
In addition to commercial cargo, Peregrine also carries a variety of scientific cargo provided by NASA and other space agencies.
The special cargo includes souvenir capsules from Celestis and Elysium Space. Note that their inclusion in the mission has been criticized by the Navajo Nation, who say bringing human remains to the Moon would be a desecration of sacred space.
