This week, the new action film “The Beekeeper” with Jason Statham in the main video was supposed to be released in the US box office. But the last premiere in Russia was cancelled.
Probably the reason was the sanctions rules and the refusal of the film studio to deal with the necessary distributors, or perhaps the distributors of “Slave 2” and “The Bremen Town Musicians” found a hidden opportunity in the new action film and put pressure on the cinemas. True, we don’t know yet.
However, we have already watched the new product and are in a hurry to share our impressions. Did you lose the Russian audience due to the termination of the distribution of “The Beekeeper”?
It’s almost John Wick, but there’s a twist. Many nuances
What is the movie about: Adam Clay (Jason Statham) is a beekeeper in a quiet suburb. He befriends sweet old lady Mrs. Parker, but her life takes a turn for the worse when swindlers deceive her and rob her of all her money. After her tragic trip, Adam decides to take revenge on the scammers.
Let’s start with the thought that came to mind throughout the entire viewing. The Beekeeper is a film that seems to be deliberately a bad parody of the John Wick films.
John Wick is a real-life killer who is trying to retire, but returns to his last life because of personal places. In the new film, Statham plays a former member of the Beekeepers, one of the extrajudicial government agencies that often appear in these types of films and carry out tasks that no one else can choose. Only this time no one gave him a task, he was just very angry because of the death of the old woman whom we saw for five minutes. It even sounds stupid.
In “John Wick” the dog is a gift from his deceased wife, the hero was very much loved; in “The Beekeeper” the old ladies are simply an old woman deceived by a telephone by scammers who did not survive what happened.
However, the main character of the hero Jonu does not stop until the very end to achieve his goal on the spot, and literally walks over corpses.
But while John Wick creates a unique world of hitmen who abide by rules and codes, The Beekeeper takes a more mundane start with a beekeeper who decides to play justice and takes on phone scammers. While John Wick offers a complex world and mythology, The Beekeeper remains simpler, secondaryand just a comic film.
From the same first scene where hackers arrive at the office, most often stylized as a villain’s lair from comicsthe thought is imposed: this is an obvious stupid caricature and generally hack work.
Wick looks like a structured action film, while The Beekeeper goes the route of using the genre with elements of comedy and absurdity. Some scenes look like this clumsilythat you wonder how screenwriter Kurt Wimmer, the author of such interesting films as “The Thomas Crown Affair” and “Law Abiding Citizen,” wrote such a stupid story.
And it’s not about the concept itself, it’s about the details and nuances. Many of the characters often behave illogically and evoke a sense of adequacy in their actions, which makes the film strange and frivolous. Moreover, the secondary characters, the police, following in the footsteps of the “Beekeeper” are constantly trying to joke, surprisingly and not very much. It looks strange, forced and unfunny.
At the same time, it may seem that, unlike the places behind the dog, the beekeeper’s actions look much more peculiar. After all, he destroys the toxic capitalist enterprise that gleefully preys on the vulnerable middle class, along with the helpless legal system that empowers the firm to do so.
But it looks like banal clumsy destruction of computers, and at the same time human resources. Perhaps Beekeeper simply doesn’t know about remote servers and cloud services. After all, Statham is just a driver, mechanic, and killer of a very large shark. Our hero has not yet taken a computer course.
You can keep a kill counter here, but it’s boring
As in the fighting of the 80-90s, the main character scatters secondary enemies left and right. With the help of everything that came to hand.
Apparently the same thing happens in John Wick. But everything was filmed and staged there on a completely different level. The choreography and staging vary in different ways. Nothing memorable in the new movie you Not. Secondary, secondary and secondary again. Dumb. Too much editing, too big plans. There is a feeling that the director lives in a vacuum and is not aware of the examples of the genre of modern cool action films with the usual action staging.
In other words, The Beekeeper is a gritty B-movie with a message to match, while John Wick pays homage to all those who love beautifully choreographed high-contact action scenes and stylish scenes.
Better not watch this movie
It’s even written down here in the description
The movie is exclusively for fans of those same old-fashioned naive action films, where a lone hero, like a video game, goes from location to location in order to fight the main boss at the end.
A high level of war, ten enemy attacks using various methods, Statham’s unshaven, very gloomy face, bee metaphors and hints at a possible sequel. Everything worth waiting for in this film.
Even in “The Transporter” the plot is more complicated.
