“Apple’s proposals deny consumers choice and make it as painful as possible for others to create competitive alternatives to Safari,” Mozilla spokesman Damiano DeMonte said. “This is another example of Apple creating barriers to prevent real browser competition on iOS.”
Apple’s new rules are part of its response to the Digital Markets Act (DMA), a new EU law aimed at increasing competition in the technology industry. According to the DMA, Apple should allow developers to use their own payment system for in-app purchases, rather than forcing them to use the App Store payment system.
Mozilla isn’t the only developer criticizing Apple’s new rules. Epic CEO Tim Sweeney called the new terms a “horror show,” while Spotify said the changes were “nonsense.” Apple’s rules still need to be approved by the EU Commission.
