Scientists from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and the University of Oslo have concluded the existence of ancient lakes on Mars. Proof of this was the data obtained with NASA’s Perseverance rover.
Space writes about this with reference to an article in the journal Science Advances. Using the RIFMAX radar, the rover examined the soil at the bottom of Jezero Crater. The scientists obtained a two-dimensional image of a surface 20 meters deep.

The RIFMAX data showed sedimentary deposits of water that once filled the crater. The study confirmed previous findings about the existence of lakes on Mars based on orbital images and other data.
Researchers suggest that the deposits formed about 3 billion years ago.
Experts suggest that some parts of the planet were once covered in water with microbial life, and that Mars was once a warm, wet, habitable planet.
“The changes we see in the rocks are caused by large-scale changes in the Martian environment,” said David Page, RIFMAX deputy principal investigator and professor at UCLA.
Scientists plan to continue careful study after receiving the samples collected by the rover.
