Not eating late at night has many proven health benefits. Typically, people tend to eat processed foods high in carbohydrates and fat instead of balanced meals during this period. The timing of your meals can affect digestion, absorption, metabolism and weight, according to Janes S. Laster, MD, board certified in internal medicine and obesity medicine, gastroenterology and nutrition.

A 2022 study found that eating later in the day made participants feel hungrier, reduced the number of calories they burned, and led them to store more fat. But these effects may depend on the type of food, genetics, stress level, and other factors.

It is also generally accepted that eating early in the evening is associated with weight stability. If a person eats before going to bed, this significantly increases acid reflux symptoms. Those who suffer from heartburn or bloating are advised not to eat 90 minutes before bedtime to prevent unpleasant symptoms.

So is eating after 8pm really that bad? According to a 2015 study, if food is scarce, nutrient-dense, or low in calories, the negative effects of eating late at night may not be permanent. Whether these snacks are healthy or not plays a big role. For example, pizza, ice cream or chips will be harmful no matter what time of day. Instead, choose fruits, vegetables, lean proteins or nuts.
