The X870E chipset requires USB4 support at 40 Gbps, which requires an additional controller chip. This means motherboard prices are higher. While AMD strives for consistency, flexibility and availability may suffer.
Despite possible delays, Zen 5 promises to surprise thanks to 4nm chipsets and improved DDR5 support (up to DDR5-6400). Existing AM5 motherboards can join the party with a BIOS update.
Initial plans to launch the 16-core Zen 5 series by mid-2024 appear to be over. Zen 5 is expected to launch later this year, possibly alongside the competitive X3D and Zen 5c variants.
