OpenAI’s lead AI security researcher, Lilian Weng, has announced that she will be leaving the startup. Weng has served as vice president of research and security since August 2024 and, before that, was head of OpenAI’s security systems team. Your last day of work will be November 15. And he has yet to announce a new workplace. The researcher has collaborated with OpenAI since 2018.

In a post on X, Weng wrote that after 7 years at OpenAI, she felt “ready to start over and explore something new.” He added that the decision to leave the company was “extremely difficult”:

“As I look at what we have accomplished, I am very proud of everyone on the Security Systems team and have every confidence that the team will continue to thrive.”

Weng joined OpenAI on the startup’s robotics team and, in 2021, transferred to the applied AI research unit. Following the release of GPT-4 in 2023, Lillian was tasked with creating a dedicated security systems development team, which now numbers approximately 80 people.

Weng’s departure marks another in a long line of AI security researchers leaving OpenAI, many of whom accused the company of putting the commercial benefits of its product before security.

Previously, Ilya Sutskever and Jan Leike, leaders of the disbanded Superalignment team, which was trying to develop methods for managing superintelligent AI systems, left the company. Others who left due to oversight over AI policies included Andrej Karpati, Miles Brundage and Suchire Balaji.

Additionally, senior management is abandoning OpenAI en masse. Executives who have left OpenAI in recent months include CTO Mira Murati, co-founder John Shulman, research director Bob McGrew and research vice president Barrett Zof.

Some of these people, including Leike and Shulman, joined OpenAI rival Anthropic, while others started their own businesses.
