Originally known as “Bard,” the AI chatbot and other AI-powered products are now being brought under the Gemini umbrella. The move is in line with Google’s consolidation efforts following the merger of its Google Brain and DeepMind teams, symbolized by the name Gemini, which means “twin” in Latin.
But there are concerns about the potential for confusion and lack of clarity around using the same name for both the AI model and the products it supports. Unlike traditional Google names that emphasize simplicity and clarity (e.g. Google Photos, Drive, Maps), Gemini fails to convey the essence of the product to users.
Moreover, relying on astrology or historical references like NASA’s Project Gemini may not effectively convey the intent of Google’s AI offerings. This mismatch between a product’s features and its name may require additional marketing efforts to raise awareness, which can create a perceived barrier to product adoption.
Unlike OpenAI’s approach of distinguishing between underlying technology (e.g. GPT) and product names (e.g. ChatGPT), Google’s strategy lacks flexibility and future-proofing.
