In Russian cities and densely populated areas, 5G will use a frequency in the range of 4.4–4.99 GHz. This follows from the new Radio Frequency Band Allocation Tables approved at the end of January.

This stream is now required from radio equipment that is not compatible with cellular communications. In addition, the government establishes the conditions for their distribution, the rules of competitions and auctions. After this, the 4.4-4.99 GHz range can be restored between operators.

At first, operators insisted on allocating the 3.4-3.8 GHz band for 5G because it is used in most countries around the world. But in Russia this period is occupied by radio equipment of law enforcement agencies.

The development of networks at frequencies of 4.4–4.99 GHz is faster than at 3.4–3.8 GHz, Tele2 said. Global telecom equipment manufacturers rarely use the 4.4–4.99 GHz range, so operators have to pay Russian manufacturers.

Last year, as part of a joint venture between operators in the 5G space, we explored the availability of the 4 GHz network. The results of the fact that a frequency resource will appear in it for future fifth-generation networks are seriously limited.

Earlier, the head of the Ministry of Digital Development, Maksut Shadayev, stated that 5G on Russian equipment would be launched in large cities in 2026, and electrical work would be carried out in 2025. [Известия]
