Professor Matteos Santamouris points out the potential of green roofs to significantly reduce the city’s peak temperature and save energy. These roofs, which can be installed on new as well as existing buildings, represent a large-scale, nature-based solution to urban overheating.

Modeling has shown that the more buildings are covered with green roofs, the greater the reduction in temperature and energy consumption will be. At 90% coverage, city air and surface temperatures will drop by 0.54°C and 2.17°C, respectively, and the building’s energy consumption will decrease by approximately 7.7%.

Professor Santamouris emphasizes that the implementation of strategies to reduce urban heat loads, such as green roofs, is of critical importance in combating urbanization and climate change, and warns of the potential for catastrophic results if such steps are not taken.
