The new edition of DSL 2024 has generated a lot of interest since the last update was released more than 10 years ago.
Over the years the size of the distribution has increased significantly; It has grown from 50 MB in 2008 to 700 MB today. Despite the apparent increase, DSL’s core philosophy remains unchanged; providing a complete desktop environment for computers with limited resources.
Based on Debian and antiX, DSL 2024 retains the ability to run from a live CD, although it now requires a standard-sized disk.
John Andrews, the driving force behind the project, argues that 700MB is now the absolute limit for DSL due to the need for compatibility with traditional CD-Rs.
The new version offers a wide range of applications selected for their functionality, compactness and minimal dependencies.
DSL 2024 includes two window managers, three web browsers, many applications for office work, media playback and other necessary tools.
To save space, developers used terminal-based applications, limited localization to a few English languages, and removed various source code and documentation source files.
An important innovation is the full inclusion of apt, which allows users to install their favorite applications that may be missing from the distribution.
