In the study, 1,002 70-year-olds without dementia were followed for 15 years and their blood was tested for antibodies to HSV and other viruses. During the study period, 7% of participants developed all-cause dementia and 4% developed Alzheimer’s disease (AD). People with IgG antibodies to HSV and evidence of previous infection were twice as likely to develop dementia as those without the disease.
Although this study adds to the growing body of evidence linking HSV to dementia, further research is needed to confirm the findings and understand the underlying mechanisms.
It is also worth noting that there was no “more significant” association between HSV infection and asthma.
