The letter, published by The Elders and the nonprofit Future of Life Institute, states, among other things, that government leaders who fail to make decisions “with wisdom and urgency” are responsible for the potential AI crisis. And country leaders lack the will or capacity to take decisive and effective action to address technology-related risks. Solutions are mostly based on short-term and superficial measures.
The letter compares the AI crisis to the climate crisis, nuclear weapons and a global pandemic.
“Some of these threats threaten the existence of life on Earth. We do not yet know how significant the emerging risks associated with artificial intelligence will be. The signatories of this letter call on world leaders to work together to solve these problems,” he said.
