On Friday (16) Meta presented: A bracelet that can track hand movements based on electrical activation of muscles. The device, which is still in development, should hit the market in the coming years, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in an interview with Morning Brew Daily.
The presented prototype seems to be one of the fruits of the company CTRL Labs, which Meta acquired in 2019. The company has been working on bracelet technology since at least 2015.
Unlike virtual reality headsets like Meta Quest 3 and Apple Vision Pro, the bracelet does not use a camera to track hand movement. In reality, The device uses electromyography data (a graphical representation of the electrical activation of muscles associated with muscle actions) to understand movements.
Using this method, in addition to overcoming visual tracking restrictions (such as obstacles or the need for lighting), the bracelet will have less latency and better reading accuracy.
The mechanism would have many benefits, including supporting more discreet gestures and interaction between hands. Advantages in usability will provide direct benefits to virtual or augmented reality, eliminating the use of controls altogether.
Racing in virtual reality
Since the launch of the Apple Vision Pro, Meta has begun to highlight its own investments in the industry and show how mature its products are compared to its competitors.
Even CEO Mark Zuckerberg expressed his opinion about Apple’s headset, giving a quick analysis of the device and comparing it with Meta Quest 3.
No release date
Although the bracelet already has promotional videos and promises to bring advances in the field of virtual reality, this is only a prototype. During the conversation, Zuckerberg says: The accessory will hit the market in the coming years, but no predictions have been made.
