Since January 2024, more than 510 million Russian citizens’ data has been leaked online. At the same time, 500 million of them were compromised as a result of a leak, deputy head of Roskomnadzor (RKN) Milos Wagner told TASS.

Roskomnadzor reported on the leak of 500 million Russians’ data at the same time

In his words, last year the number of data breach cases increased in annual terms, but the volume of leaks decreased. “And this year, this case covered almost all of the previous year,” Wagner said.

For the entire year 2023, the RKN identified 168 personal data breaches, while approximately 300 million records on Russian citizens ended up on the Internet. Two years ago, 600 million records were leaked online and more than 140 leaks were recorded.

In January 2023, the State Duma approved in first reading bills on fines for billing and criminal liability for leakage of personal data. Those who decide to transfer Russian data abroad will face up to eight years in prison, and up to five years for those who decide to make money by selling this data.
